WOW!!! Did you ever google stress?? …The statistics regarding stress are beyond alarming!!! Just reading about stress I began to feel stressed!
“It has been estimated that 75 – 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems”. Stress.org
“More than 9 in 10 (94 percent) adults believe that stress can contribute to the development of major illnesses … “ American Psychological Association.
“Seventy-five percent to 90% of all doctor’s office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints …” Web MD
During my search I came upon an analogy (I apologize I can not remember the source) that provided a great visual regarding the process of stress.
The example went like this ….. imagine you are trying to squeeze toothpaste out of a tube which still has the lid on. What happens? The toothpaste has to come out somewhere and if it can’t come out of the top it will find the weakest point in the tube and come out of there….Now imagine you are a tube of toothpaste; you are feeling under pressure, stress levels rising, you carry on day in and day out ignoring how you feel, not making any attempt to deal with your stress, keeping all of your emotions bottled up and suppressed. So what happens when the pressure from the stress continues to build up inside you? Trust me, it will eventually find a way out of you. It will find your weakest point and come out there!! Perhaps you are not sleeping well with the constant mental chatter and to-do lists that seems to get longer by the minute and your quality of sleep shorter by the minute. It could be demonstrated in your behavior by the way you talk or react in situations that was not your best self or even your average self on a good day. Maybe you drink more alcohol or eat more junk food to help suppress that stress but what you are really doing is pushing and securing that cork on a pressure cooker. Oh … and not to mention the wonderful way you feel the next morning after “the binge”! Now, add that feeling on top of the feeling of climbing out of the hole attempting climb back up on top of the daily mound of stress. Hey, baby it is morning time to get up and start yes …. climbing out of the hole to greet STRESS!!! I think you have a pretty clear picture at this point.
Stress in itself is neither good or bad. Think about it; it can arise at many times and in many different ways from daily stress to major life events like getting married or a promotion. Yes, even what we call good life events create stress. Generally, the daily stresses in our lives in of themselves are not good or bad. They are just events that occur. But it is how we perceive and react to stress that makes the difference. Stress has a very real impact on the body if it is repressed and not dealt with appropriately in a timely manner. It ignites and fuels the fight or flight part of your nervous system which sends out inflammatory hormones through out your body and eventually weakening the immune system, leaving us vulnerable to illness.
Obviously we can’t always avoid stressful situations or traumatic events but what we can do is become more conscious of our stress and prioritizing self care as in stress management.
Think of times when you have been stressed and how it affected your body. You may have experienced muscle tightness in your neck and shoulders, developed a headache or had discomfort in other parts of your body. Stress causes congestion in our energy system. Healing Touch techniques help to relieve that congestion.
We are integrated beings and we cannot separate the physical from the emotional, mental or spiritual aspects of ourselves.
